Diagnostics vs code reading

There's a fundamental difference between reading a fault code and diagnosing a fault. A £20 code reader from Amazon will tell you "P0171 — System Too Lean." That tells you the symptom. It doesn't tell you whether it's a vacuum leak, a failing fuel pump, a dirty MAF sensor, a cracked intake boot, or an injector fault. Proper diagnostics identifies the root cause — which is the only way to fix it first time without throwing parts at it.

Full system scan — all modules, not just engine. Transmission, ABS, airbag, body control, instrument cluster — faults anywhere in the vehicle
Live data analysis — monitoring sensor values in real-time to identify deviations from expected parameters
Freeze frame data — examining the exact conditions (engine speed, load, temperature, fuel trims) when a fault was stored

Is a diagnostic scan the same as reading fault codes?

No. A fault code is a starting point, not an answer. A code tells you which system has flagged a fault — proper diagnostics involves live data, component testing, and systematic elimination to identify the actual failed component. Anyone can read a code. Interpreting it correctly requires experience and proper equipment.

Can you diagnose intermittent faults?

Yes. Intermittent faults require a different approach — we use freeze frame data to understand the conditions under which the fault occurs, then replicate those conditions while monitoring live data. Some intermittent faults require a road test with the scan tool connected to catch them in the act.

Do you clear warning lights?

We clear codes once the underlying fault is repaired. Clearing a warning light without fixing the cause is pointless — it'll return within a drive cycle. If someone's cleared your codes before and the light has come back, that's because the fault was never actually fixed.

What equipment do you use?

Dealer-level multi-brand diagnostic tools (Delphi, Autel MaxiSys), plus manufacturer-specific software where needed. Four-channel oscilloscope for waveform analysis. Smoke machine for leak detection. This isn't a £30 Bluetooth dongle plugged into the OBD port.
