When an engine needs rebuilding

An engine rebuild becomes necessary when internal components have worn beyond service limits or suffered catastrophic failure. It's a significant undertaking, but on the right vehicle it's considerably more cost-effective than replacement — and you end up with an engine you know the history of, built to spec with new internals.

Signs you need a rebuild

• Bottom end knock — deep metallic knocking from the crankshaft area, worse under load
• Excessive oil consumption — burning more than 1 litre per 1000 miles with no external leaks
• Low compression across multiple cylinders — engine lacks power and runs rough
• Blue smoke on startup or under acceleration — worn valve stems or piston rings
• Catastrophic failure — timing belt/chain failure, hydraulic lock, oil starvation
• Bore scoring or glazing visible on inspection
• Metal contamination in the oil (bearing material)

Types of rebuild

Not every engine issue requires a full strip. We assess what's needed and quote accordingly:

• Top end rebuild — Cylinder head removal, valve stem seals, valve lapping/replacement, head gasket, head skim. Addresses oil burning and compression loss from valve issues. From £800.
• Bottom end rebuild — Crankshaft bearings (big end and main), connecting rods, oil pump, seals. Addresses knocking, low oil pressure, bearing failure. From £1200.
• Full rebuild — Complete strip to bare block. Re-bore or hone cylinders, new pistons and rings, bearings throughout, all seals and gaskets, timing components. The engine is returned to as-new specification. From £2500.

What's involved

• Complete engine strip-down and inspection of all components
• Crankshaft measurement — journals checked for ovality and taper
• Cylinder bore measurement — checked for wear, taper, and ovality
• Machine work — bore honing or re-boring, crankshaft grinding where needed
• New piston rings, bearings (big end and main), oil seals throughout
• Cylinder head overhaul — valves, seats, guides, springs
• New timing kit, oil pump, water pump where applicable
• Assembly to factory torque specifications with calibrated equipment
• Oil priming, run-in procedure, and post-build inspection

How much does it cost?

Engine rebuild costs vary significantly depending on the scope of work:

• Top end rebuild: from £800
• Bottom end rebuild: from £1200
• Full rebuild: from £2500+

We provide a fixed price after initial inspection. The engine needs to be stripped and measured before we can quote accurately — there's no way to price a rebuild without seeing what's inside. Initial assessment and strip-down is quoted separately.

How long does it take?

A top end rebuild typically takes 2-4 days. Bottom end work takes 3-5 days. A full rebuild with machine shop work can take 1-2 weeks depending on parts availability and machining lead times. We'll keep you updated throughout.
